Home Bakery
Where can I find information on obtaining a license for a private in home bakery?

I want to bake and decorate cakes to sell as a home based business in Harris County. I know the laws vary from county.I have looked but I can only find information for "mobile food units" and "fixed structures" nothing about private home bakeries. Does anyone know a link or a number, I just need to know if I can even obtain a liscense, and what are the requirements to do so,seperate kitchen, oven, seperating wall etc.??? I want so much to start my business but I need to learn the legalities of it first.
Oh and I live in Harris County, Texas
Thanks

I suspect you may be painting yourself into a corner. Instead of searching for the requirements for a bakery, research catering. There are many home-based caterers. In fact, I'd try to meet and talk with a few. That would be a more time effecient approach.

That being said, I think the best (and most cost-effective) way to solve your problem is to rent time in a commercial kitchen. These establishments are already properly zoned, licensed, inspected, etc. The most difficult task will be to find one close enough to your home to make it convenient for you.

I did a google search for "commercial kitchen" Houston rent and found 68,000 results.

Another good place to look (or post a request) is Craigs List and bakery-net.com user forums.

Finally, many large churches have commercial kitchens. You might check to see if any in your area would be willing to help you out.

Good Luck!
