Stage Booster
What are the stages for car seats?

When do you switch from a car seat to a booster...and all that good stuff! Thanks :o )

Not until you absolutely have to b/c the child has outgrown the highest weight harnessed seat you can buy! A child is safest in a 5 point harness and should be kept in one as long as possible. Each move to the next stage of car seat should be seen as a demotion, not a promotion. Parents get all excited when they 'get' to move their child to the next stage, when in fact, they should think of it as they 'have' to move them. They are less safe with each change. So....

Babies should be kept rear facing as long as possible, to the weight limits of the seat. Most seats go to at least 30lbs rear facing, Cosco/Dorel/Safety1st/Eddie Bauer seats go to 35lbs rear facing, Britax and Sunshine Kids seats go to 33lbs rear facing. Their bones have not completed the ossification process that hardens them and bonds them together, and they need the bracing support a rear facing seat provides in a crash. Their legs touching the back of the vehicle seat is NOT a problem.

Once switched forward facing, kids should be kept in a 5 point harness as long as possible. All seats at Walmart only harness to 40lbs, which holds most kids until they are 3-4 years old. Most 3-4 year olds are NOT ready for a booster seat yet! So, that is where HWH (higher weight harness) seats come in. Britax Regent is the best - will hold children till they are 8-9 years old, 80lbs in a 5 point harness!! Safety1st Apex is an option if your vehicle has good headrests, it will harness to 65lbs, Britax Marathon harnesses to 65lbs, Recaro Como (coming in the fall )will harness to 70lbs. Evenflo Triumph Advance harnesses to 50lbs. Fisher Price Safe Voyage Convertible car seat harnesses to 55lbs (it's a Britax seat made for Fisher Price, Britax quality for a fraction of the Britax cost!)

A child is moved to a booster seat when they outgrow the harnessed seat - either their shoulders being about the tallest harness slots, or their ears being above the seat shell back. Graco Turbobooster is great b/c it is inexpensive but still has SIP (side impact protection.).

Once a child is 4'9" AND 80lbs, they can be moved to a seat belt, but not before then! And kids under 12 should always be kept in the back seat.

**Do an online search for Kyle David Miller foundation to see why 5 point harness is safest.
