High Voltage
In a capacitor, why does the positive plate always have the high voltage?
Hi. I'm just starting out with High School physics and I would like to know why the positive plate in a parallel plate thingy (capacitor) always has the high voltage. Also, why does the electric field flow from the positive plate to the negative one. I thought only electrons could move, so wouldn't it be the opposite way?
*I meant to say "higher voltage". Sorry.
It's a convention that comes from before we knew about electrons. Early scientists knew something was flowing in circuits but they didn't know what it was. They arbitrarily decided to say current flows from the positive to the negative side of the battery. Even though we now know that electrons flow from the negative side of the battery the original convention lived on.
